BG 7.9: I am the pure fragrance of the Earth, and the brilliance in fire. I am the life-force in all beings, and the penance of the ascetics.

Commentary

Shree Krishna continues to describe how he is the essential principle in everything. The specialty of ascetics is their denial of bodily pleasures and willful acceptance of austerities for self-purification. The Lord says he is their capacity for penance. In the Earth, he is the fragrance, which is its essential quality; and in fire, he is the radiance of the flame.
